Dr. Desmond Ooi is a senior consultant in General Surgery with sub-specialist interest in Vascular & Endovascular surgery with over 15 years of experience.
Dr. Ooi's expert, patient-centered, evidence-based care has put many patients and their relatives at ease. His warm and approachable manner is recognised by various media outlets where he has been invited to provide expert knowledge and advice.
Over the years, Dr. Ooi has also been recognised for his passion for teaching and has received a variety of awards.
Career
Dr. Ooi graduated from The University of Southampton (UK) with a Bachelors of Medicine in 2005. Following a few years working in the UK, Dr. Ooi moved to Singapore to complete his specialist training in General Surgery and subsequently completed his postgraduate degree in Masters of Medicine (MMed) from the National University Singapore (NUS). Dr Ooi gained his fellowship in Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 2015.
He was awarded the Health Manpower Development Award by Ministry of Health (MOH) in 2016 and received specialised training in Vascular and Endovascular Surgery in the UK, where he focused on evidence-based and innovative ways to treat an array of vascular diseases. He is currently registered with the Singapore Medical Council and the General Medical Council, UK.
A passionate teacher, Dr. Ooi has worked as an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Yoo Loo Lin School of Medicine Singapore, where he has played a fundamental role in teaching and inspiring surgical residents and trainees in the National Healthcare Group.
He has been awarded multiple awards for his excellence and dedication in teaching.
Driven to provide the best patient care, Dr. Ooi’s consistent dedication can be seen in his recognition as a Service Champion coming from patient satisfaction. He believes communication is paramount in patient care, and goes above and beyond for his patients.
Dr. Ooi has held leadership positions. In his role as a patient safety officer, Dr. Ooi was accountable for clinical safety and risk management, where he evaluated and improved patient safety based on International Standards and National Guidelines.
Dr. Ooi’s team were awarded a Public Health Grant from NHG to streamline Diabetic Foot Care. As Hospital Lead, Dr. Ooi was instrumental in the establishment of the Diabetic Foot Service at KTPH.
Dr. Ooi’s ability to speak multiple languages fluently including Chinese, Hokkien, Cantonese, Malay and English enable him to communicate and connect with all, understanding them, and helping them feel heard.
